What the pool filter actually does

Your pump moves water through the circulation system, but the filter captures the fine material carried with that water. Dust, pollen, hair, insects, dead algae, and other particles collect in the filter instead of returning to the pool.

That workload is especially important in Jacksonville, where long swim seasons, heavy rain, pollen, landscaping debris, and warm temperatures can place steady demand on the system.

Signs a filter may need attention

  • Filter pressure has risen noticeably above the clean starting pressure
  • Return flow feels weaker than normal
  • Water remains cloudy even though chemistry is being corrected
  • The cleaner moves slowly or circulation appears uneven
  • Debris returns to the pool or filtration cycles take longer
  • The pump basket struggles to remain full because of a circulation restriction

A commonly used service indicator is a pressure rise of about 20–25% above the filter’s clean baseline, but the filter manufacturer’s instructions should take priority. Low pressure can also signal a problem—such as a clogged skimmer basket, blocked impeller, air leak, or low water level—so pressure alone does not diagnose every issue.

How a dirty filter affects the pool

Reduced circulation

As captured debris restricts the filter, the system has to work against more resistance. Reduced flow can create areas with weaker circulation and slower delivery of filtered, sanitized water.

Cloudy or dull water

Water may test within a reasonable chemical range and still look dusty or hazy if fine particles are not being removed efficiently. Chemistry and filtration solve different parts of the clarity problem.

Extra strain on equipment

A restricted filter can make the pump operate under unfavorable conditions. The exact effect depends on the pump, plumbing, speed setting, and type of restriction, but maintaining appropriate flow helps the whole system perform as designed.

Harder algae recovery

Chlorine kills algae; the filter then helps remove dead algae and suspended material. During a cleanup, an overloaded filter may need more frequent service so the pool can actually clear.

Cartridge, sand, and DE filters need different care

Cartridge filters

Cartridges are removed and rinsed carefully between the pleats. A damaged, flattened, or chemically fouled cartridge may require deeper cleaning or replacement. Excessively aggressive pressure washing can tear the media.

Sand filters

Sand filters are usually cleaned by backwashing and then rinsing according to the valve and manufacturer instructions. Backwashing too often can be unnecessary; waiting until flow or pressure indicates the need usually preserves water and maintains effective filtration.

DE filters

Diatomaceous earth filters require proper backwashing or disassembly and cleaning, followed by the correct amount of fresh DE media. Running a DE filter without its required media can expose the grids to debris and reduce filtration performance.

How often should a pool filter be cleaned?

There is no single calendar interval for every pool. Filter size, pool use, landscaping, rainfall, algae, pets, construction dust, and pump runtime all affect the schedule. A properly sized filter on a clean pool may go much longer between services than a small filter handling heavy debris.

The best approach is to record the pressure immediately after a complete cleaning and use that as the baseline. Combine pressure with return flow, water clarity, and a physical inspection.
